First creations
It all started with the itching feeling of wanting to create something. At the time I did not know it would turn into something more than a simple hobby, more than a way to just pass the time. It has become my main avenue into creativity.
Like many during the pandemic, the first piece I created was a poor imitation of the JW Anderson Patchwork Colourblock Cardigan. Also known as the Harry Styles Cardigan, it became more than just a TikTok trend. For me, creating a version of this cardigan turned out to be more experimental rather than a true recreation. The main constraint was that I did not have the correct colours of acrylic yarn balls. However, what I did learn from this project was the different kinds of crochet stitches. The standard single and double crochet, to my favourite Alpine stitch. Aside from the colour, the other flaw of his piece is clearly in its construction. In hindsight, it would’ve been very easy for me to properly align the patches but it is not something I realised until I was done with the project.
At the end, it looks nothing like Anderson’s design. From that perspective, this would be classed as a flop. But, for me, at that point in my life, I can appreciate the fact that simply completing the project was a huge success for me. Moreover, it spawned a lasting passion for creating and design.
With the second piece, evidently, I was yet to learn my lesson. Once again, the piece was mis-aligned and remains to be something that irks my mind. However, I was able to work more with colours I thought were better and construct it like a proper sweater. Instead of simple yet janky stitches, the second piece had defined neckline and short ribbed sleeves.
On my third attempt, I made a light summer top that soon became my signature style. After making a ribbed band using front post single crochets, I would construct the body from then on. It was easier than following any pattern or tutorial I could find. Three years on, and it remains the main way I make my projects.
